Watering: Check weekly, water if top 25% of soil is dry. Begonia do not tolerate drying out.
Light Requirements: Medium to bright indirect sunlight.
Humidity Needs: High, over 75%. Some varieties will prefer even higher.
Soil Preference: A well-draining, high in organic matter potting mix is ideal.
Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer once a month in spring and summer. Cease feeding in winter months.
Repotting: Pot up 2" in Spring or Summer when roots begin to emerge from drainage holes. Can wait a bit longer as begonia enjoy being somewhat rootbound.
Pet Safe: No - Begonias consist of soluble calcium oxalate, which, when ingested, causes vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea and even cause fatal diseases like kidney failure.
Common Issues: Crisping due to lack of humidity is a common issue, a pebble tray nearby or underneath can be helpful. Misting of begonia can lead to fungus issues. Also keep an eye out for common plant pests that love higher humidity levels.
